"Ferociously inventive, painfully vivid, dispassionately bleak and dreadfully memorable." — Publishers Weekly
Hugo and Nebula nominee, Best Novella
Captain Ean Tephe is a man of faith, whose allegiance to his lord and to his ship is uncontested. The Bishopry Militant knows this — and so, when it needs a ship and crew to undertake a secret, sacred mission to a hidden land, Tephe is the captain to whom the task is given.
Tephe knows from that the start that his mission will be a test of his skill as a leader of men and as a devout follower of his god. It’s what he doesn’t know that matters: to what ends his faith and his ship will ultimately be put — and that the tests he will face will come not only from his god and the Bishopry Militant, but from another, more malevolent source entirely...
Say your prayers... and behold The God Engines.

Hanna is what you'd call mentally ill. She'd call it being totally crazy. After running away to Portero, Texas to find her estranged mother, Hanna thinks this new town can't be any crazier than she is. She's wrong. Portero is haunted with doors to dimensions of the dead, and protected by demon hunters called Mortmaine.
Hanna soon falls for a young Mortmaine named Wyatt, but when her mother is possessed by a murdering ghost, Hanna decides to do whatever it takes to save her, even if it means betraying the boy she loves. In the end no one will be left unscarred.

Fifteen-year-old Tomas Torres, the son of an immigrant family who are just barely making it, gets picked up by the police for doing some work for the local padrone (collector). For this work, Tomas has made $1000 a week, a lot of money by anyone's count. But what is the work? What is Tomas arrested for? Arson, but arson that cannot be explained. Tomas has a most unusual gift: he is a fire-starter—he can start fires with sheer force of will that flame from the tips of his fingers. Moreover, he can will fireballs to hurl at his enemies or opponents, and he can incinerate any evidence. But the courts decide they have enough to convict young Tomas and send him off to a school (which Tomas believes to be a kind of jail): St. Rhiannon's School for the Gifted and Exceptional Student.
At St. Rhiannon's, Tomas soon finds that he is not alone. St. Rhia's, as they call it, is a school for students of all ages with "gifts" like Tomas's: students who are pre-cogs, storm-callers, witches, healers, wizards, techno-shamans, psionics, firestarters, teleporters, psychics, sensitives and much, much more. Things he could never have imagined happen at St. Rhia's, and in time Tomas comes to feel less alone. He begins to believe in what he actually sees (astral warriors, for example) and all that he is taught by his attractive young mentor, VeeVee.
All students at St. Rhia's are attempting to learn to control their gifts. Tomas, too, must learn about the ethics and the laws of magic (of which he knows nothing) and more, how to control the strength and force of his fire.
Join Tomas and his friends as they journey through St. Rhia's and beyond, both through the outside world and through magical Gates to the magical worlds of Chaos and other kingdoms where their gifts will be tested. If they succeed, their powers will take on new relevance and meaning.

At seventeen the world is at your feet… especially if you can teleport.
David Rice barely remembers his mother. She left his alcoholic father when Davy was very young. She left Davy too, and since then, all of William Rice’s abusive anger has been focused on his young teenage son.
One evening, as he is about to receive another brutal beating, Davy shuts his eyes and wishes to be safe. When he opens them again, he finds himself in his small town's library. Slowly, he realises he is very special—he can teleport.
Armed with his new power, Davy sets out with new purpose: he will leave his abusive home and find his long lost mother. Davy's confidence grows as his skills do, but they also draw unwanted attention. Soon, Davy finds that he is also being hunted.
This series continues with Reflex, Impulse, and in September of 2014, Exo. Jumper was the basis of the 2008 movie of the same name starring Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jamie Bell.

In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about sixty years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all.
On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds: angry mobs of adventurers, a body falling apart at the seams — and a team of programmers racing a deadline to hammer out the last few bugs in their AI.

Amazon.de 3,8 Sterne bei 11 Bewertungen 5,18€
Imagine a world where everyone is dazzlingly beautiful and symmetrically perfect. No zits, blemishes or unseemly hair that would make a person ugly or… unique. In the world across the river, everyone is perfect. But being pretty is not an option, it's the law. Follow Tally Youngblood as she tries to escape her fate and fight against a government bent on stripping her of her true identity.
Scott Westerfeld's novel, Uglies, is a compelling read about the dangers of Big Brother and the importance of protecting individual freedoms amidst the chaos and tumult of the modern world. Uglies is the first installment of this thrilling series.

Hörbuch Cory Doctorow – Homeland
Amazon.com 4,4 Sterne bei 73 Bewertungen (Buch)
Amazon.de 4,7 Sterne bei 3 Bewertungen (Buch)
In Cory Doctorow's wildly successful Little Brother, young Marcus Yallow was arbitrarily detained and brutalized by the government in the wake of a terrorist attack on San Francisco—an experience that led him to become a leader of the whole movement of technologically clued-in teenagers, fighting back against the tyrannical security state.
A few years later, California's economy collapses, but Marcus's hacktivist past lands him a job as webmaster for a crusading politician who promises reform. Soon his former nemesis Masha emerges from the political underground to gift him with a thumb drive containing a Wikileaks-style cable-dump of hard evidence of corporate and governmental perfidy. It's incendiary stuff—and if Masha goes missing, Marcus is supposed to release it to the world. Then Marcus sees Masha being kidnapped by the same government agents who detained and tortured Marcus years earlier.
Marcus can leak the archive Masha gave him—but he can't admit to being the leaker, because that will cost his employer the election. He's surrounded by friends who remember what he did a few years ago and regard him as a hacker hero. He can't even attend a demonstration without being dragged onstage and handed a mike. He's not at all sure that just dumping the archive onto the Internet, before he's gone through its millions of words, is the right thing to do.
Meanwhile, people are beginning to shadow him, people who look like they're used to inflicting pain until they get the answers they want. Fast-moving, passionate, and as current as next week,Homeland is every bit the equal of Little Brother—a paean to activism, to courage, to the drive to make the world a better place.
