Wie wichtig ist AV1 Hardware Decoding bei neuem Laptop?

Hallo Leute, ich wollte mir zeitnah einen neuen Laptop organisieren. Es soll ein Thinkpad sein mit 14", FHD und 400nits IPS-Panel. Ob Intel oder AMD ist mir nicht so wichtig, auch wenn ich aktuell preistechnisch eher zu AMD tendiere. Habe ein paar Modelle im Blick (Campus Program) und hätte wahrscheinlich schon zugeschlagen wenn die CPU (AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7530u) Hardwarebeschleunigung für AV1 Decoding unterstützen würde. Es ist ein Gerät der neusten Generation, aber vermutlich eins der letzten neuen Modelle ohne AV1 HW support.

Wie schätzt ihr die Situation ein, lieber ein anderes Modell wählen? Lieber abwarten? Oder lieber zugreifen und entweder auf VP9 bauen (soweit möglich) bzw. notfalls AV1 software decoding machen?

Guckst du viel Netflix Youtube sonst kann man auch per Addon auf h264 forcen

Joa schon hin und wieder mal Streaming, auch Netflix aber eher YouTube. Für die nächsten 1-2 Jahre mach ich mir da auch keine Sorgen dass VP9 ausgephast wird (oder weiß jemand gegenteiliges?), geht mir eher so um die Zeit danach. Dann müsste ich entweder mit niedrigerer Qualität schauen oder AV1 software decoding machen, was ja nun schon ordentlich auf die CPU/Akku geht...

If you don’t have AV1 support in hardware, YouTube is likely going to just push you the 4K video using the VP9 codec that Renoir, Comet Lake, and Ice Lake all have hardware decode support for.

The short take is that if your laptop doesn’t have AV1 decoding, it means you’ll use more bandwidth, or you’ll use more battery watching that super high-resolution video in the future—but that future is probably a long ways off.
